1.    Legislation update:  If you haven’t already heard the “Accessible Built Environment Standard” is out for review.  Please check the government website of  http://www.mcss.gov.on.ca.  Public feedback is needed to help make a proposed Accessible Built Environment Standard make sense for everyone. The committee’s initial proposed standard will be available for review until October 16, 2009. The public will have an opportunity to review the initial proposed standard and supporting documents, and to provide their input online at:

In September, public consultation sessions will be conducted across the province. Interested Ontarians may participate in a consultation session by calling 1-888-482-4317 or toll-free TTY 1-888-335-6611, or email  public.review@oliverwyman.com.

The “Information and Communication Standard” has been released in its final draft form. It is now with the Minister of Community and Social Services who is expected to take it to the legislature to be made law. The Standard has requirements regarding documentation in the form of policies and procedures, a training component, availability of alternate documents, accessible websites and education on accessibility for regulated professionals. The standard also deals with access to emergency plans and public safety information. Upon enactment, all organizations (private, public and not-for-profit) will have to comply to a number of requirements within one year. Other requirements have a two to fifteen year implementation. We will be sending more information on the development of workshops, resources and opportunities for your organization. Accessible Web Design coming the beginning of November. This course will give you the tools and resources needed to comply with the Information and Communication Standard. More details and course outline to follow.

 

3.    Mark your calendars!! Accessible Experts Ltd. Inaugural Accessible Conference.  Located in Norfolk County on November 17, 2009.   The day will consist of some of the following:

-          Updates on the AODA Standards

-          Sharing of best practices

-          Specifics around various disabilities

-          Knowledgeable guest speakers

This conference will be a helpful and supportive all –day information and education sharing experience. Designed for those individuals who are responsible for moving their corporation or organization forward towards making Ontario Accessible by 2025.
